Report from Wrangway
The penultimate round of the Ian Durston plant services British Sidecarcross
championships took place at the Broadhembury clubs Wrangway track in
Somerset. On one of the hottest days of the year dust was going to be an
issue but the club did manage to control it well in the open area of the
track where the majority of spectators were but in the wooded parts of the
track it did get up a bit at the beginning of each race.
After three faultless rides Brown / Peters were the overall winners and also
clinched the championship for 2008 with one round still to go. Runners up
overall were Wilkinson / Burt with the Millard brothers, Dan & Joe taking
the third spot.
With a somewhat depleted entry of just 22 teams the first race got under way
with the race to the first corner won by Brown from Wilkinson, Keane and
Breacher. Keane and Breacher were very quickly relegated to 5th and 6th when
both Millard and Lyne passed them. For the next couple of laps Brown opened
up a gap over Wilkinson whilst Lyne started to apply pressure to Millard and
eventually overtook him on lap 4. By half distance Keane was out with a
broken suspension link, the third one to fail on his KHR outfit this year.
With just over five minutes of the race to go Eastman, who had started back
in 10th & Jarvis who had started in 13th, closed the gap on Breacher and
Kinge respectively. For nearly three laps these four were virtually nose to
tail but with just two laps to go Eastman suffered front brake problems and
dropped back to 8th. Brown took the win from Wilkinson with Lyne third.
The second race was led into the first corner by Millard from Eastman,
Bowers and Breacher with Brown in 5th, Wilkinson in 9th and Lyne right at
the back after an early tangle with Jarvis. Within three laps Brown was in
the lead with Millard now having to fend off Eastman. Wilkinson was quickly
up to 4th but it took him four laps to get past Eastman and then set off
after Millard. From the very back Jarvis and Lyne were coming through the
field and by half distance Jarvis was up to 7th and Lyne, now suffering from
a failing exhaust, was 10th. With less than five minutes of the race to go
Wilkinson got past Millard to take second and Jarvis passed Breacher to take
5th. Once again Brown won from Wilkinson with Millard third. Jarvis came
home in an excellent 5th whilst Lyne could only manage 8th and was possibly
lucky not to be noise tested after the race with his exhaust hanging off.
In the final race of the day Lyne made amends and took the lead from
Millard, Breacher and Brown. Wilkinson didn’t get such a good start and was
back in 8th. Millard held second place for a couple of laps until Brown got
past and immediately started to close on Lyne. After six laps Brown was in
the lead from Lyne with Millard third and Breacher firstly having to fend of
Eastman until he broke down and then Wilkinson. Wilkinson passed Breacher on
lap 7 but although he closed the gap a bit on Millard he never really got
within striking distance.
Brown took the win and the championship from Lyne with Millard third.
The final round of the championship will be held at Wattisfield hall near
Diss in Suffolk just beside the A143 on 31st August.
